Editing and Proofreading

The different forms of editing which I undertake are normally divided into:

  • Copy editing: This is probably the most common type of project that I do. It involves a range of activities to ensure the production of accurate and error-free text. The focus in copy editing includes grammar and spelling, fact checking, consistency in style (according to a particular style guide, for example), and refining the text for consistency and clarity.
  • Developmental editing: This form of editing looks at the big picture of your text, focusing on argumentative structure, logical flow and overall narrative coherence.
  • Proofreading: This is often the final stage in publishing and relates to checking for any errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar. Usually, no larger edits or changes are introduced at this stage.

I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), a non-profit organisation which promotes excellence in English language editing. The CIEP has a Royal Charter and is a global reference point for editorial standards.
