Why did you become an academic editor?

After a career in academic research in various institutions across Europe, clients often ask why I decided to work as an academic editor. Here, I explore this a little, and link to a podcast interview I did on this topic.

This photo from the north of Spain gives some insight into why I transitioned from postdoctoral researcher to freelance editor. After living and working across Ireland, Scotland, Guatemala, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Germany (twice!), I wanted a livelihood which would facilitate a more rooted and sustainable lifestyle than had been available to me previously. My house is located off in the background of the valley in the photo. I adore living here and watching the seasons pass without worrying about the next international move or university contract.

I started editing over ten years ago and happily discovered that I enjoy helping academics to communicate their research more clearly. I also like to help them see the light when they are struggling or feel they are too close to a project.

For a fuller insight into my journey and how I ended up developing years of experience in non-fiction and academic editing, you can watch the following interview with me on the Leaving Academia: Becoming a Freelance Editor podcast.
